A brief description of John's career profile to date

John Rees, PSHE Solutions. Personal, Social and Health Education professional. Consulting, Support, Advice and Training.

John is a freelance trainer & consultant specialising in supporting Local Authorities, schools and individuals in all aspects of PSHE education, Healthy Schools and school improvement.

John was seconded to Devon’s Healthy Schools programme in 1994 and was involved in developing policy and translating this into best practice with primary, secondary and tertiary phases and with a range of support agencies.

Between 1996 and 2006 John managed APAUSE, a uniquely effective school-based sex and relationships education programme based at Exeter University.

John led the transformation of APAUSE from a two-school research project into an effective and sustainable, theory-driven, multi-agency programme which has been enthusiastically welcomed by commissioners, parents, teachers and health professional. The programme currently involves 100,000 young people annually across England, Wales and Eire.

APAUSE
has evidence of educational gain and health benefit which is unique in Europe.

Having trained in the UK midlands, John spent 12 years teaching, eventually as a senior manager of a secondary school in Devon with specialist responsibility for behaviour management, curriculum development and pastoral support.

As a teacher some of John’s specific achievements included:

•  Development of ‘Rewards & Sanctions’ policy to improve behaviour and achievement;
•  Innovation of cross-phase induction to improve student Integration and achievement;   
•  Redesigned work experience arrangements to improve our
world of work curriculum and post-16 links;
•  Improved PSHE curriculum and pastoral provision to encourage professional and personal development,
   foster a more
positive school ethos and support school improvement.
